Beer for my horses

Howdy Y’all

The Dancing Dog Saloon

Geocachers are a social bunch, well in Kent we are! Every month we have a meet up so that like minded people can get together and chat all things geocaching, from difficult hides to mind-blogging puzzle caches. Most meets are just a case of turn up, chat, drink tea/coffee/beer, have a bite to eat and head out to find some nearby geocaches.

wpid-20130216_130018.jpgAnd February 2013 was no exception, only this time with a slight twist. Lardy_Bloke was our host and once again he decided that we should have a themed meet. This year he wanted us to all to get into the swing of things by dressing up in our finest cowboy/girl attire and mosey on down to The Dancing Dog Saloon in Bobbing.

So at High Noon on 16 February dressed in our checker shirts, jeans and boots, toting guns and cowboy hats we arrived en masse for Beer for my Horses.

Our only instructions were ” Check shirts! Hats! Waistcoats!? Heck, even leather chaps might be acceptable…. Let’s have a bit of pointless fun, and go country for a couple o’ hours. It’d be rootin’ tootin’ good fun to see y’all there.”

Lardy_Bloke did not disappoint us with his choice of venue. A wonderful looking saloon with swing doors awaited our arrival. Complete with side and back porches for the tobacco chewers amongst us.

Everywhere you looked there was a cacophony of paraphernalia, cowboy hats upon the ceiling, boots hung on the walls, dream catchers and Native American portraits adorned every spare inch of the establishment. Even the restrooms continued with the Western theme.

There was something for everyone here at the saloon, the atmosphere was heart-warming and the chatter was electric. Grown adults excited by the effort put in by the landlords to give The Dancing Dog Saloon a believable Western edge. At the bar there were even a couple of saddle stools, of course we couldn’t leave without having a go at sitting on them, imagining we were in a real rodeo.

The weather was kind to us on the day, so many of the “cowboys & cowgirls” took the opportunity of heading out to find the new nearby geocache’s that Lardy_Bloke had prepared for the occasion. All in keeping with the Western theme, well Country music to be more precise. They were able to choose from Johnny Cash, Kenny Chesney, Brookes & Dunn, Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley. Lardy_Bloke even catered for the more geekier geocachers who like a challenge, a puzzle cache (which I still have no clue over) called ITALOMTLTC. Apparently everything I need to solve this puzzle is in the listing page! I’ll save this for the day when I finally begin to understand puzzle caches.

Anyone for poker?

For those of us who stayed behind there was still plenty to do. We could play on the poker table or even the checkers board, enjoy some good food prepared fresh on site or have a wander around the themed garden. Every time I went out there all the geokids were running around and investigating all the nooks and crannies. Including the working water pump and trough.

All in all I have got to say this has been one of my favourite events. I had been rather unwell that week with cold/flu and did not think I would make it to the ho-down. I am so glad that I did, although the meet was the only cache I found that day I still had a root tooting fabulous afternoon with my geocaching family.

If you want a Country & Western theme outing or you think you may want to try line dancing, then I highly recommend The Dancing Dog Saloon. Go on, you know you want to!
